Around Northstar

The mountain, the village, the lake.

5045 Gold Bend Getaway puts you minutes from the lifts, the Village ice rink, and Tahoe's most photogenic beaches. Here's how to make the most of every season β€” plus local restaurants, shops, and services we love.

🍴 Eat & Drink

A short walk to Coffeebar in the Village, or a drive to favorites at Northstar and around Truckee.

Coffeebar

Coffee & breakfast

A 15-minute walk down the hill from the condo, Coffeebar is the locals' weekday morning ritual. Order the espresso and a baked egg cup, or come at lunch for one of the seasonal sandwiches and a cold-brew. Expect a short line on powder mornings β€” that's your tell that the lifts are spinning. Outdoor seating is heated in winter, dog-friendly year-round. Pro tip: their pastries sell out by 10am on weekends, so go early.

The Lodge at Big Springs

Lunch on the mountain

Mid-mountain at Northstar, accessible from the Big Springs Express lift or a quick drive up. The Lodge is the easiest sit-down lunch on the mountain β€” hot sandwiches, soups, salads, and a sunny deck when the weather cooperates. Indoor fireplace seating fills up around 12:30; arrive by 11:45 or after 1:30 to skip the squeeze. Bathrooms here are the cleanest on the mountain, just so you know.

Summit Deck & Grill

Top-of-mountain views

The highest dining at Northstar at 8,610 feet, served at the top of the Summit Express. The food is solid mountain comfort β€” burgers, chili, beer β€” but the real reason you're here is the view of the Sierra crest. On clear days you can see Lake Tahoe to the south and the Lost Sierra to the north. Open during ski season only; closed in summer when the lift runs for biking. Take the lift up just for the view, even if you're not skiing.

Zephyr Lodge at Northstar

Mid-mountain comfort food

Mid-mountain lodge with a big stone fireplace and the most reliable lunch on the hill. Wood-fired pizzas, salads, and a full bar make this the spot for a long lunch that turns into a half-day. Accessible by ski or via the Big Springs Express lift. Heated outdoor seating means you can stay in your ski boots and still feel civilized. The kids menu is genuinely good β€” not just chicken tenders.

Rubicon Pizza

Casual dinner

A 16-minute walk from the condo (or a 4-minute drive), Rubicon is the easy après-ski dinner answer. Wood-fired pizzas, hand-tossed pastas, and a tap list of Tahoe-region beers. They take walk-ins but get crowded after 6pm on weekends — call ahead or order takeout to eat at the condo. The bianca pie with prosciutto is the move. They're generous with the gluten-free crust.

⛷️ On the Mountain

Northstar California Resort is the headline β€” lifts, the Village ice rink, and miles of bike trails depending on the season.

Northstar California Resort

Skiing & snowboarding

World-class skiing and snowboarding right next door. The free Northstar shuttle stops a few minutes' walk from the condo and gets you to the lifts in about 10 minutes β€” no driving, no parking lot. Northstar has 100 trails across 3,170 acres, with terrain for every level. The bottom half is famously family-friendly; the top of the mountain has expert tree skiing in Sawtooth Ridge. Lift tickets and rentals are easiest to buy in advance online; Epic Pass holders are in their element here.

Village Ice Skating Rink

Winter family fun

Free outdoor ice skating in the middle of the Northstar Village β€” open daily during winter from late November through early April. Skate rentals are available on-site for about $15, or you can bring your own. Fire pits and Adirondack chairs ring the rink, so non-skaters have somewhere warm to camp. The rink runs until 9pm most nights and gets crowded right after dinner; mornings (10am–noon) are the best skate.

Northstar Bike Park

Summer mountain biking

In summer, Northstar transforms into one of the best lift-served mountain bike parks in California. Over 100 miles of trails ranging from green-circle beginner flow to double-black-diamond chunk. Rentals (full-suspension, downhill, and e-MTB) are available in the Village, including pads and helmets. The bike park typically opens early June and runs through late September; check northstarcalifornia.com for daily lift status. Bring sunscreen β€” most trails are exposed.

A championship 18-hole course designed by Robert Muir Graves, with a links-style front nine and a true mountain back nine that climbs into the pines. Twilight rates (after 2pm) are some of the most affordable in the area, and the open-deck grill is a great post-round hang overlooking Martis Valley. The course opens mid-May and closes mid-October depending on snow. Booking 5–7 days out usually gets you the time you want.

Big Springs Homeowners Club

Pool, hot tubs, gym

Included with your stay: indoor and outdoor heated pools, three hot tubs, a fitness room with cardio and weights, a game room with foosball and pool, and a sauna. Pickleball and bocce courts are seasonal. The Club is a 4-minute walk from the condo β€” you'll get a key card when you check in. Hours are 7am–10pm. The outdoor pool is the warmest of the three; the rooftop hot tub at sunset is unbeatable.

πŸ”οΈ Around Tahoe & Truckee

Beyond Northstar β€” historic Truckee, Lake Tahoe beaches, and Reno are all close.

Fifteen minutes from the condo down I-267, Truckee's Commercial Row is a few well-preserved blocks of 19th-century brick buildings now full of independent restaurants, bookstores, gear shops, and boutiques. Park anywhere along Donner Pass Road and walk. The historic train station is still active β€” you'll hear Amtrak whistles in the afternoon. Best for: a slow dinner downtown, browsing Bespoke or Cabona's, or a coffee at Wild Cherries before a Donner Lake morning.

Donner Lake

Summer swims

A quieter, warmer alternative to Lake Tahoe β€” about 12 minutes from the condo. Public access at Donner Memorial State Park has a swimming beach, paddleboard rentals, and picnic tables under the pines. The west end (Shoreline Park) gets sunshine longest into the afternoon. Donner is significantly warmer than Tahoe in summer (low 70s vs low 60s), so it's the kid-friendly choice. The historic Donner Pass Road above the lake is one of the prettiest drives in California.

About 45 minutes from the condo, Sand Harbor is Tahoe's most photogenic beach β€” turquoise water, granite boulders, and views across to the Sierra crest. It is also one of the busiest in summer; the parking lot fills by 9:30am most days, and once it's full, they close the entrance. Arrive before 9am to walk in, or come after 4pm when the day crowd thins. Shakespeare Festival performances happen here on summer evenings β€” bring a low chair.

About 40 minutes from the condo via I-80, RNO is the closest major airport. Direct flights from most US hubs (SFO, LAX, JFK, ATL, DFW, ORD, SEA, etc.) and good ski-season service. Rental car kiosks are inside the terminal, and the drive to Truckee is straightforward β€” though check road conditions December–March, when Donner Pass can require chains. Cheaper alternative: Reno-Tahoe β†’ SoCal flights often beat SFO; San Francisco airport is 3+ hours by car.
