Truckee in Summer — What to Actually Do

Most people associate Truckee with ski season, but summer here is arguably better — long evenings, alpine lakes, and the kind of weather (low 80s, low humidity) that's vanishing from the rest of California. Here's how we'd spend three days in summer.

Day 1 — lake day

Start at Donner Lake (12 minutes from the condo). It's warmer than Tahoe by 8–10°F in summer and significantly less crowded. Donner Memorial State Park has a swimming beach and paddleboard rentals. Pack a lunch from the Truckee Bakery on the way in. Spend the afternoon. Save Lake Tahoe proper for Day 3 when you're acclimated.

Day 2 — Northstar bike park or hiking

Northstar's bike park is one of the best lift-served mountain bike parks in California — 100+ miles, every difficulty level, full-suspension rentals in the Village. If you're not a biker, the Martis Trail behind the Rec Center is an easy 2-mile loop with great views and almost no elevation. Or take the gondola up just to walk around at the top.

Day 3 — Sand Harbor or Truckee

Sand Harbor is Tahoe's most photogenic beach — turquoise water and granite boulders. Arrive by 9am or the parking lot closes. If lake day doesn't appeal, spend the morning in downtown Truckee instead: coffee, the historic train station, gear shops, and a long lunch on a back patio.

Don't miss

  • Shakespeare at Sand Harbor (summer evenings). Bring a low chair.
  • The free Northstar Village concert series (Saturdays in summer).
  • Coffeebar's outdoor seating before 10am.
  • The drive up to Donner Pass overlook at sunset.

The condo's heated garage parking, EV charger, and Homeowners Club access (pools, hot tubs, gym) make summer stays feel like a real reset. Check your dates →
