"Dog friendly" on VRBO often means "we'll let you bring one, but the place isn't actually set up for it." After hosting a few hundred dogs at Gold Bend over the years, here's what actually matters when you're picking a Tahoe rental for a trip with your dog.
What to look for
- Walkable from the front door — not a slog through a parking lot to find grass. Northstar's Gold Bend area has paved paths and pine trees right outside.
- Heated garage or mudroom — so wet/snowy paws don't track into the living area.
- Easy-clean flooring — no white carpet in winter, period.
- HOA rules — some Tahoe condos quietly restrict dogs even when the listing says yes. Confirm with the owner before you book.
- Reasonable pet fee — $50–100 per stay is standard. $200+ is a red flag for "they don't really want dogs but won't say no."
Trails that allow dogs
The Martis Trail behind the Big Springs Rec Center is dog-friendly on-leash. Donner Memorial State Park has a paved bike path that allows dogs. Most Northstar resort trails do not allow dogs in summer when the bike park is open — check signs before you start a hike.
Restaurants with patios
Coffeebar's outdoor seating is heated and welcomes dogs. Rubicon Pizza's patio does too. Most patios in downtown Truckee allow dogs in summer.
How we handle dogs at Gold Bend
One small-to-medium dog welcome with a $75 pet fee. Heated garage parking means you can shake off snow before coming in. Hardwood floors in the living area. The Homeowners Club outdoor walkways and grass are dog-friendly. We provide a folded blanket for the couch and treats on the counter — just ask in your booking request.
